Starting a Website

So, I have an idea for starting a website. It will be called, ilostmypantsandshoes.com. This website will be dedicated to all the random pants and lonesome shoes that are left on the street and highways because I do not understand how someone can lose their pants or shoes and not realize they are laying out in the middle of the road. That means there are people wondering around without pants or with one shoe. Really?! I don't understand how that happens. It is truly a phenomenon and I hope my website will be able to return the lost pants and shoes to their rightful owners.

Portfolio Website

Great article, it has some really good tips on what you should include in your portfolio website to make it effective. You need to remember the reason of your personal website and its purpose and what you hope to gain from having it. A personal portfolio site is about promoting yourself and you need to highlight what it is you and how you can provide your services to future client. Make sure to make it easy to get in contact with you, you don't want a possible client not be able to get a hold of you to hire you!

Lightbox

There are many ways to display images on your site, but what if you want something different? Lightbox has got to be one of the most popular ways of displaying images on a web-site available at the moment. Not only does it provide a slick way of showing off your photographs or illustrations but it looks really cool too. Here's a good site that walks through how to able this cool effect to your site

Content Based on Broswer

All of the articles I have been reading about creating good web design, always make a point of designing for all browsers, but this article that I read talks about how you have to design for a web browser and a mobile device differently. Someone who is browsing the web is more than likely surfing the web, but someone who is browsing on a mobile device, is looking for specific information and they want it fast and efficiently. Because of this, when you design for a mobile device, you have to make your site easy to navigate, to the point, and easily uploaded (if your site is too complex, the user we stray from viewing your site).

I would like this book as a gift.

New Adventures in Web Design

If anyone wanted to go to a web conference, in England, in the middle of winter, found one! It's the New Adventures in Web Design conference. It seems pretty interesting, good speakers, and I think you could come away with some really good info.

Website Design

Going along with the previous post, here's another article about current trends in web design. This article had some helpful tips not only about the design of a website, but how to make yours user friendly. The trend is interactivity and easy navigation, because if the viewer can't navigate through your site, it won't matter what your design looks like. The article also made a good point about a website being able to perform efficiently and consistently in any browser, this ensures the viewer sees what you want them to see.

Trends for 2011

A few design trends that may be popular for the upcoming year...I think I may try them out and see if I can incorporate any of them.

HTML5

Came across this interactive music video by Arcade Fire called “The Wilderness Downtown.” Awesome concept, borders on a little creepy because of how realistic, but it is amazing what technology is capable of these days. The whole concept is that you can put in your childhood address (or any address you'd like) and if Google maps has enough information or pictures from your address, the HTML5 code will build the environment using several browsers of varying sizes and shapes. Amazing!

Amazing

Really?! I goggled "building a website in dreamweaver" and this little diddy on ehow.com came up. If only building a website took 8 steps including opening a new file and saving it, I would be a genius. I really hope no one really went to that site, read it and thought, "oh, websites are easy to build, what is everyone complaining about?" because I am sure they went into total shock within in the first 39 secs when they realized they couldn't even link the css file or better yet, still don't even know what the hell a css file is!

Web and Graphic Designers

I came across this blog and although it stated some obvious points about web design, it was interesting how she made comparisons between print layout and web layout. I have found that web design is fun and interesting to do, but coding has not come as easily to me. I think though, once I really get the main points and general understanding of what I'm doing, I'll be okay...at least I hope! http://www.amberweinberg.com/teaching-graphic-designers-about-the-web/

Resume App

After reading this article, I think I am going to forgo making a portfolio website and make a resume app instead (if there isn't one already out there). More convenient for future employers (they can review my portfolio on the toilet if they so incline) and this way, I may actual get a job after I graduate!
